Short answer: Whonix consists of two virtual machines: the workstation has no direct network, and the gateway sends all traffic through Tor. Get images only from whonix.org.
What it is for
For users who want to isolate applications without booting from USB every time. Unlike Tails, VM state persists if you configure it that way.
Comparison
| Tor Browser | Tails | Whonix | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Layer | App | Live OS | Two VMs |
| Persistence | Profile on the host | Optional on USB | Typically persistent |
| Effort | Low | Medium | High |
Limits
The hypervisor and host must be trustworthy. Whonix does not heal OPSEC failures. No unofficial “Whonix packs.”
