Short answer: Tor Browser is the official hardened Firefox fork for the Tor network. It routes web traffic through relays, unifies the fingerprint, and isolates websites. Get it only from torproject.org. Extra extensions are usually harmful.
What it is for
Protected research, less tracking, access despite local censorship (with bridges if needed). It is not an all-purpose everyday browser for banking apps, streaming accounts, and personal logins in one profile.
What it does beyond the network
The Tor network hides your connection IP from the website. The browser adds:
- a unified window size and font strategy against fingerprinting
- isolation between websites
- HTTPS-first and warnings about insecure connections
- three security levels that progressively disable risky web features
Without this browser — just “Firefox plus a SOCKS proxy” — much of the protection is lost.
Download and updates
Official channels only. Signature checks and the first connection are covered in Tor Browser setup. Third-party “portable” packages are a classic infection path; see Detecting phishing.
Keep the browser current. Old versions lose fingerprint hardness and security fixes.
