A different model
Hydra differed structurally from mail-based Western shops. It popularized a dead-drop delivery system — packages hidden at physical coordinates rather than posted — and wrapped the market in adjacent services, including a built-in coin mixer and an exchange for cashing out. Vendors operated regionally, and the platform functioned as infrastructure for an entire domestic scene rather than as a single store.
The takedown
In April 2022, German federal police (BKA), working with US agencies, seized Hydra’s servers in Germany and confiscated 543 bitcoins; the US simultaneously indicted its alleged operator.
