A curated index of .onion sites. The original was community-edited; modern editorial directories keep staff control and split markets from the link list.
The Hidden Wiki is the name of the original community-edited .onion directory — and, by extension, of the countless clones and forks that reuse the name. Because onion addresses are unmemorable and search engines index only a fraction of them, someone always ends up maintaining a list.
Why it matters
Directories solve the dark web’s discovery problem, and the Hidden Wiki was the default answer for years: a starting page linking markets, forums, and services. Its open-editing model was also its downfall — anyone could replace links, so phishing copies of listed sites flourished, and today the name refers to many unrelated wikis of wildly varying quality.
Common mistake
Treating any list as verification. A wiki row tells you someone pasted an address; it does not tell you who controls it.
